Grow, Pray, & Study Guide "A Season of Grief" Read Psalm 22 Almost every time, renovation of our homes or our lives begins with tears. The psalm today begins with tears and anguish. This is the psalm that Jesus quoted while on the cross. But notice as you progress through the psalm that each section becomes more powerful, more upbeat. There is a deep joy that shines in the last verses. Remember back to a time when you have been in grief. What was the situation? What was the devastation as you began? How did it gradually change? Is there any joy that has come from this in your life yet? Daily Prayer: Draw us into a time of attentiveness, O Holy One of Israel. Open our hearts, minds, and spirits to what your story reveals. Speak to us through Scripture and through our interactions together as we explore your Word and seek to live more deeply this week in your love. Amen.
Join us tomorrow @ 10:00 am for worship, as we continue our Lenten sermon series based on Rev. Jacob Armstrong's book "Renovate: Building a Life with God." Renovations often begin with tears, but they also begin with sketches/dreams of what could be. There will be music, singing, Scripture, prayer, a message, community, and fellowship. Join us for a wonderful morning of worship at Alexandria UMC!
Such horrific news coming out of New Zealand. Lifting our brothers and sisters in Christchurch in prayer tonight and all the law enforcement that responded to stop the massacre from continuing. We must strive to eradicate such violence and hatred in all its forms throughout the earth. We must strive to root out racism and fear of others so that it does not lead, like it did today, to such heinous acts of violence. Grieving for the families who are grieving the loss of their loved ones tonight on what is their day of prayer together in community. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer, and may your peace and love cascade across the whole earth to heal us and set us free from causing so much harm to one another.
Grow, Pray, & Study Guide "Restored and Strengthened" Read 1 Peter 5:6-10 Jacob Armstrong, in his book Renovate, says, "Your renovation is not a do-it-yourself project." (p. 26). It is God's grace that restores you. In a physical building, a renovation creates a building that is different from the original. This is what we are talking about in this study: the renovated you can be different than the original in so many ways. What is it in you that needs renovating? Now, if you can, ask a friend of yours that same question. What do they think needs renovating in you? Prayer: O God our deliverer, you led your people of old through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide now the people of your church, so that following our savior, we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of what is yet to come. Amen.
Grow, Pray, & Study Guide "God's Building" Read 1 Corinthians 3:9-16 "You are God's temple, and God's Spirit dwells in your midst." (Verse 16). We are all 'fixer-uppers' and God is working on each of us from the inside out to renovate our lives. When you look in your physical or spiritual mirror, what do you think others see in you? What do you think this communicates to others? Keep in mind you are a beloved child of God and created in God's image. Does God come across in your everyday life? Prayer: O God our deliverer, you led your people of old through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide now the people of your church, so that following our Savior, we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of what is yet to come. Amen.
Grow, Pray, & Study Guide "Living Stones" Read 1 Peter 2:1-5 Verse 5 from this Scripture reading says, "You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house." You are a living stone in God's eyes and more importantly in God's hands. You are being used by God to build the kingdom of God in in this world. When is a time in your life when you have sensed that God was renovating you? How have you seen it happen in the lives of others? Prayer: O God our deliverer, you led your people of old through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide now the people of your church, so that following our Savior, we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of what is yet to come. Amen.
Grow, Pray, & Study Guide "An Invitation" Read Psalm 100 We start with the fact that God's loving presence is always a reality in our lives. We are each invited into God's presence, no matter who we are or what has happened in our lives. Verse 4 in the song "The Summons" reads: "Will you love the 'you' you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around?" Are we prepared to go wherever God is calling us to? Prayer: O God our deliverer, you led your people of old through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide now the people of your church, so that following our Savior, we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of what is yet to come. Amen.
Join us tomorrow @ 10:00 am as we begin our Lenten sermon series "Renovate: Building a Life with God." We will be talking about how we all are spiritual houses for God, and how we sometimes could all use some renovation. There will be music, singing, Scripture, a message, prayer, and community. Join us tomorrow for a wonderful morning of worship together at Alexandria UMC!
Tonight we begin the season of Lent at 7:15 pm with our Ash Wednesday service. We reflect together within the community of faith on our mortality as human beings and how we have often strayed from loving God and our neighbors. We come together in community to reflect, seek forgiveness, reconcile, and then go out to carry the hope of Christ into every aspect of our daily lives. Join us.

Grow, Pray, & Study Guide ~ for Saturday, February 23, 2019 (A Short Daily Devotional) "Go Make Disciples" Read Matthew 28:16-20 Have you ever felt that you have been discipled? Who taught you about Jesus? Was it clear or confusing? To become a disciple is to follow our great teacher and savior Jesus, become more like Jesus, and then teach his ways and what he means for us. We have been given a great commission to go and proclaim the gospel and to love all the peoples of the earth as God's children. Are we ready for this commission? Are we ready to do it together? Are you ready to be sent out in Jesus' name? Who are you going to take with you? Daily Prayer: God of Blessing and Love, we give thanks for all the wondrous gifts that you have given us and how your presence is known through the body of Christ and in the world. Give us courage to use the blessings you have given us so that we may establish your justice and love through our words and actions. Amen.
Grow, Pray, & Study Guide ~ for Thursday, February 21, 2019 (A Short Daily Devotional) "They Were Afraid" Read Mark 16:1-8 Verse 8 was how most ancient translations of the Gospel of Mark ended. "And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid." Well, obviously the women at the tomb told people because we are here as Christians today, but I think this ending speaks to a truth about what it means to know the resurrection story of Jesus. It is one of great hope and blessing, but it is also a challenge to us. Knowing that Jesus was risen from the dead meant that the work was not over. Where there was grief, there was now a kingdom to proclaim. How is the work of spreading the gospel message hard? Are you ever afraid to tell anyone about it? Daily Prayer: God of Blessing and Love, we give thanks for all the wondrous gifts that you have given us and how your presence is known through the body of Christ and in the world. Give us courage to use the blessings you have given us so that we may establish your justice and love through our words and actions. Amen.
